  They have been led by two of the greatest coaches in college basketball history: Frank McGuire, who led them to the 1957 National Title, and Dean Smith, who won National Championships in 1982 and 1993. Smith, in fact, led the Tar Heels into the NCAA Tournament in 28 of his 35 seasons as head coach. As one of the charter members of the ACC, the Tar Heels have been a symbol of excellence for many years, and have long been embroiled in one of college basketball's most fierce rivalries with nearby Duke University.

  Among historic players that have played for the Tar Heels in their history include Michael Jordan, Walter Davis, Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, Vince Carter, Brad Daugherty, James Worthy and Bob McAdoo.

• 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship

  On March 18, 2009, Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams announced that point guard and ACC player of the year Ty Lawson, would probably miss the Tar Heels first game in the NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels face Radford in the opening round. Lawson will likely miss the game due to an injury to his right big toe.
