Nintendo Wii Nunchuk Controller

Categories: Video Games | Nintendo Wii
  • The Nintendo Wii Nunchuck Controller is a separate device that plugs into the Wii Remote. The Nunchuck controller has an analog joystick, two buttons and simple motion sensing capabilities.

Most games do not require the nunchuck to be plugged in to the Wii Remote. Since the Nunchuck has an analog joystick it is most typically used to move characters and objects around in a game. The Nunchuck is however more flexible than traditional controllers and can help players interact with games in many innovative ways.

  • Story

The Nunchuck was released at the same time as the Nintendo Wii, on November 19th, 2006. The Wii comes bundled with a Wii Remote and a Nunchuck controller.

The pack in the game Wii Sports does not require the Nunchuck for most of the games. Instead the game is focused on the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote.

The only sport in Wii Sports that uses the Nunchuck is the boxing game. This game showcases the flexibility of the Wii Controller scheme. Ignoring the joystick all together the Ninchuck is used to sense when the player throws a punch.

  • Gameplay

When the Wii was released all the attention was focused on the Wii Remote and the leap to motion sensing as a way to control video games. The Nunchuck was and still is largely overlooked even though it represents a shift in philosophy that is arguably just as revolutionary as motion sensing.

Splitting the controller into two separate parts not only allows gamers to decide for themselves the most natural way to hold the controller. More importantly, the split controls allow a much greater range of control schemes.

Using the Nunchuck in Wii boxing is one example. The various ways the Nunchuck is used in Wii Music is another. The Nunchuck can function as the neck of a guitar, a drum stick, a handbell and many other instruments.
