Nintendo E3 2008 Keynote Live Blog
- 10:07 Cammie is back, and she's recapping everything we've seen. "Nintendo simply brings more smiles to more face," she says. Reggie says, "Let's be honest. From the moment the Wii went on sale...we all heard the same word. 'Fad.' Well, that word is no longer operable." He goes on to explain how Nintendo has interrupted the entertainment industry, and the next step is to interrupt "your own thinking." "Thanks for your attention, and we look forward to seeing you over the next few days." He walks off stage, ending the keynote.
- 10:05 The song starts. It's the theme from Super Mario Bros. What I'm hearing is a nightmare version of the song. They're massacring it, but having a blast. Ironically, Ravi is the backbone of the entire operation and is keeping it afloat. Wii Music looks pretty fun.
- 10:04 They're all going to play a song together. You can play with up to four players simultaneously. Our friend Ravi will be joining them on drums. Denise Kegler of Nintendo will join them on the marimba. "Looks like all that's left for is the cowbell," Bill says. "Bring the house down guys," he says.
- 10:01 In Wii Music, you'll learn to play over 50 different instruments. We're shown how the violin and guitar instruments will work with the Wii Mote/Nunchuk. Drums as well. Apparently there will be a variety of percussion instruments. The "professional drummer" from before is introduced. His name is "Ravi Drums." He was apparently using the Wii Fit as a kick drum, and the Wii Mote/Nunchuk as drumsticks. "Ravi only started practicing yesterday, and as you can see he's already gotten pretty good," Bill says. There is skeptical laughter from the crowd at this.
- 9:58 Miyamoto would like to introduce us to Wii Music, the game we've been viewing. We're told, if you want something that everyone can enjoy in the living room, regardless of age of gender, music is a must. He continues, most music games require you to press buttons like you would on the real instrument. But we've designed Wii Music to let people who don't know how to play real instruments to still experience the joy. Miyamoto explains how he was playing the sax: he was holding the Wii Mote and actually playing it like a guitar.
- 9:56 Gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto takes the stage! And, he's playing Wii Mote like it's a saxophone, while Mr. drummer from earlier keeps time. Virtual characters on the screen act it all out. Pretty cool.
- 9:54 Cammie and Bill: exeunt. Reggie on the stage solo. "We want to introduce you to one more experience this holiday, that you'll be able to play with your Wii remotes." Now the lights dim theatrically, we're watching a trailer. Smoke fills the stage, ha! A player on stage is using the Wii Mote and Nunchuk wirelessly to play a drum game. He's doing various fills, and sounds every bit like an overactive drummer sound-checking before a show. He's having a blast.
- 9:51 Now they're playing the "Jet Skiing" game. It looks fun, very bright and colorful, looks responsive. Now Reggie comes back up, and they're playing "Sword Fighting". The Wii Motion Plus will allow you to swing horizontally and vertically with the sword, and it will register your movements. Cool.
- 9:46 Reggie is up now, and he's demoing the Wii MotionPlus. He tells us how it registers every small shift of your arm. He's about to show us how it will work in a game: Wii Sports Resort (Release Date: Spring 2009). Cammie is back, and she and her dog Peach are going to play "Disc Dog" together. She's joined by Bill Trinnen from Nintendo's Treehouse group. Disc Dog cues up. The on screen character is holding a Frisbee, and as Cammie slightly shifts her arm, the Frisbee on screen shifts along with her precisely. She fails the first time to navigate the Frisbee device into the small dog's mouth. There is a chipper excuse of some sort on her part. Second attempt: successful, Frisbee delivered to dog mouth.
- 9:45 Cammie continues to talk about the new capabilities of the DS. "Could it be that the DS, could even earn a spot in your kitchen?" It can I bet. The DS will serve up international recipes and cooking tips. "Trust me, I'm even worse at cooking than I am at snowboarding," she says. "Reggie?"
- 9:43 Cammie is back now. She mentions Guitar Hero On Tour, Spore, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia...and then this bomb drops: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is announced for the DS! (Release Date: Winter 2008).
- 9:39 Cammie is back, and she's showing us the trend of higher female sales between 2005 and 2007, so that it's almost equal with sales from males. "The DS is also the only gaming dedicated platform where you'll find Will Wright's Spore, this holiday season." But first, we're seeing a video demo of Guitar Hero On Tour. Some folks on screen are telling us about the ability to "share" songs between friends in the game. You'll strum using the pick stylus, of course. Now we're seeing Spore Creatures for the DS. The Nintendo version of the game, we're told, is unique. They've focused more on the creature aspect. The creature creator is intuitive and easy to use. Also, there is the ability to "share" your creations. Sharing is all the rage....
- 9:38 Now the game is Call of Duty: World at War for the Wii (Release Date: TBA). Again, gamers playing the game, and shots of the game itself. It looks explosive and like...a war.
- 9:37 Now it's a trailer of Rayman Raving Rabbids (Release Date: TBA). It looks like a wacky platformer. Kids are playing the game, the rabbids are snowboarding/gliding, taking crazy jumps off ramps and screaming.
- 9:36 We're seeing a trailer for Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels (Release Date: holiday 2008). Star Wars characters on screen are clashing lightsabers, with that special drone sound that they make. It looks exciting. The players on stage are swinging their Wii Motes/Nunchuks like mad. The character models look like Star Wars, but are slightly wii-ified.
- 9:33 Reggie now switches to software numbers, showing various charts that show undoubtedly strong sales. He continues by explaining how Nintendo strengthened old franchises (Metroid and Mario), and also created new games as well. "There's no way we could show you even a glimpse of every game on its way. We've chosen to just show you three new games that take very different approaches."
- 9:30 Reggie explains how smash hits on the DS have pushed Nintendo sales 29%. "In no small part, it's due to those "evergreen" titles Iwata mentioned."
- 9:28 Reggie Fils-Aime is up on the stage now. He's speaking about how the Wii has sold 10 million units, and the DS has sold 20 million. All of this accounts for $5 billion in retail. "Many of us experienced gamers are hungry for what's next," he says. Reggie now shows a chart with Nintendo sales numbers on it. He expects DS sales to grow to 100 million systems.
- 9:27 Eguchi continues, "looking ahead, I want players to have the freedom to create their own worlds...and share the world they have created, and have a place where the they can communicate with each other."
- 9:23 Katsuya Eguchi, creator of Animal Crossing, is now on the screen telling us about how he invented the game. Then a message comes up on the screen, Animal Crossing: City Folk (by the end of 2008): "Even when you are not playing the game," he says, "the animals of Animal Crossing get up and go to bed. You could really feel like you are visiting a real world. The city is a new place to visit in the game...There is a "happy room Academy," where you can find out what other players are doing. You can visit a fashion designer at her store. You can go to Harriet's beauty store and change what you look like...But the biggest news, is the new microphone option, called WiiSpeak.
- 9:22 "We seek fresh surprises," Iwata says, "and I hope you will enjoy the ones we have for you today." He thanks the crowd, and leaves the stage.
- 9:19 Iwata throws out some numbers. Europe: 100,000 DS units a week, "as if every week were a holiday week." U.S.: 700,000 Wii systems in the last three months. "But maybe, the strongest evidence comes with Guitar Hero III. While it is available on every platform, the Wii version is selling better than the others." "Now," he says, "what can we expect next? For all of us in the video game industry, there is danger in standing still...there are answers. Personally, I believe we should find more ways for players to be engaged."
- 9:16 Iwata continues, "to use a Western term, these products seem to be evergreen." He's referring to stuff like Nintendogs, and New Super Mario Bros. He informs us that the Zelda and Mario teams are both working on new games. He goes on to say, "Small games can capture a wide audience with a great idea." He continues, "Thirdly, our user base has expanded. We have learned that intuitive interface can attract those who never would have played games before."
- 9:14 Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo, comes out on stage. "Almost everyone I knew held a pessimistic view of Nintendo," he says." He explains how no one could have predicted that Nintendo would be making bathroom scales (picture of Wii Fit comes up on the screen. Laughter). "What has really changed in this new paradigm?" he asks.
- 9:11 Cammie is going to try. Oh, boy. She gets on the Wii Fit. They're going to try the half-pipe event. She exclaims, "Woot!" after landing her second jump. She thanks Shaun, "it was really great having you here," and he leaves. The game will be released "for the Wii, by year's end."
- 9:08 (Picture of Cammie standing on snowboard) "Here I am at Whistler, trying out a snowboard. I think that makes me a pretty cool mom." She then tells a story about how "the ground won, my wrist lost." "What I discovered that day," she says, "is that snowboarding is a lot harder than it looks." "All I really needed," she says, "is a little help...from a really talented friend." A secret wall is lifted, and there is Shaun White, that snowboarder guy. He's playing Shaun White Snowboarding (Release Date: Q4 2008) using the Wii Fit as a snowboard. "Once the board is involved, it enhances the gameplay," Shaun says after he's done playing.
- 9:07 Cammie Dunaway, vice president of marketing, takes the stage. "I can't stop smiling," she says.
- 9:05 Here we go. The intro is a promotional video of people, just like me and you, playing Wii games, against music that sounds like U2. Everyone's having a great time and living live to the fullest potential with Wii. It looks like an ad for a college somewhere. We can make a difference, it makes me want to say. "We promise to keep the world smiling," the caption at the end reads.
- 9:00 The image on the big screen is switching between various stills. Jubilant faces at E3, it looks like. People using the Wii Fit, doing the touchdown pose, the peace sign, etc. People wearing Wii hats with glee. Except, these folks appear to be wearing Christmas/winter attire. Holiday season? Any minute now...
- 8:56 Any minute now, Mr. Reggie Fils-Aime will take the stage and unveil whatever "big surprise(s)" he's alluded to over the past couple months. Maybe he'll say he kicks a** again?WikiQuote: Reggie Fils-Aime Quotes
