Chapter 9 - Heart of Darkness
- Walk straight ahead through the jungle, and encounter a group of Melee Ninjas. Defeat the same way you would any light enemy.
- Swim straight ahead, using the Gatline Spear Gun to remove the mine-monsters in the water, and swim up to the first save point.
- From the save point, head through the nearby room, out into an area with a bunch of search lights.
- TIP: use the Fiend's Bane Bow to shoot the search lights out from a distance. This is essential, since the Artillery Ninjas across the lake will keep a constant stream of fire on you.
- When the search lights are shot out, continue through the brief series of rooms. Run out across the water to the other side of the lake on the right. Find a chest there.
- 'chest'S: There are several chests in the area, containing the following items: Red Orbs, Blue Orbs , Grains of Spiritual Life, Herb of Spiritual Life, Devil Way Mushroom and Life of the Gods. As you move from pier to pier, eliminating the Artillery Ninjas as you go, make sure to explore a bit and find all of the chests. You are easily visible.
- TIP: when you're stationary floating in the water (even when the search light is on you), you can use the Incendiary ShurikenS to throw at the Artillery Ninjas across the water. They can't hit you when you are positioned like that. In fact, in this whole area, incendiary shurikens are you're best friend.
- After you kill a bunch of the Ninjas, a gate will partially open (you cannot go through it yet).
- Remote Sentries will spawn. You have to run up to them on the water and kill them in close combat.
- TIP: When fighting on the water, use the X attack exclusively, which will keep you walking on the water, and you can slash them until they die without interruption.
- You need to kill all of the Remote Sentries in order to lower the gate the rest of the way. When you've gone so, go through the gate.
- There is a mechanism that needs to be activated on the wall ahead.
- TIP: Back in the large lake area, there are three platforms: right, middle and left. Go to the back of the left dock, and down the back through a small gate. Down the path there, you'll find the Jade Mask, which you'll need to activate the mechanism on the wall through the lowered gate.
- Head back, and once the mechanism is activated, it opens a door behind it. Go through it.
- When you come out of the short cave, there's a chest there with an HERB OF SPIRTUAL LIFE.
- Get in the water in this new lake area, plunge under the water, and unload on the Mine Monsters with the Gatline Spear Gun. Swim through the area and explore.
- You'll notice a wire going across the top of the area, which you'll need to use to get across the next area. You'll need to go back to the entrance of the area, and swing on the consecutive system of branches that brings you to a new landing. Follow the path and encounter a group of Melee Ninjas. Eliminate them.
- When they're down, follow the path around. You'll come to a spot where you have to jump up and grab the rope that extends across the whole area.
- TIP: Beware, do not cross the area on the rope before you have first sniped the Artillery Ninjas on the other side. They'll shoot you down otherwise. Use the Fiend's Bane Bow to take them out.
- TIP: Before you make your way fully across the rope, look to your left and notice a short series of branches. Turn and swing over across the branches on the left, and find a Crystal Skull and a Muramasa shop. Restock if you need to. On your way over on the first branch you swing onto, you'll need to move Ryu to the left side of the branch in order to properly swing to the next one. When you swing onto the landing, you may need to do a wall-run to get onto the landing.
- Head back. Once you're back across the rope on the main path, follow it ahead. Melee Ninjas will attack you. Take them out.
- When they're gone, continue on the path and save at the save point.
- When ready continue forward on the path. You'll come to a small circular meadow area with a large group of Spiny Fiends. Waste them.
- TIP: The Spiny Fiends are small enemies, and so can be launched into the with the Izuna Drop or other air combos. Also, the Kusari-gama can be a useful weapon against them, since the Spiny Fiends are weak yet fast.
- When the Spiny Fiends are finally eliminated, notice the boulder blocking ahead. Charge up an arrow with the Fiend's Bane Bow and hit it dead center, which will shatter the rock.
- When you're ready head through and drop down the hole. You will be in a small, green cave tunnel. There are bats in the hallway, which are easy kills with the standard shuriken.
- The hallway ahead will contain horde after horde of Spiny Fiends. You may be tempted to simply press onward through the cave, which you can do, but you would be missing out on an opportunity to stock up on thousands of Yellow Orbs. If you take your time in this section, you should rack up enough Yellow Orbs to fully max out any of your weapons (we recommend the Eclipse Scythe if you haven't already).
- TIP: Another effective way in destroying the huge mobs of Spiny Fiends is using either the Dragon Sword or Kusari-gama fully charged up. When they rush you, retreat back down the cave tunnel a bit, and unleash an Ultimate Technique on as many of them as possible. This will help make this section go faster.
- You will eventually come to a series of rooms off to the right and left of the main path. Inside, find large egg sacks which yield caches of either RED, BLUE or Yellow Orbs. Explore a couple of the side-rooms if you are in need of either Ninpo or health, since you'll want to be fully stocked for the mid-boss fight ahead.
- TIP: This is a good place to acquire the 100 combo Achievement. We were able to continually use the Kusari-gama's Ultimate Technique on wave after wave of the Spiny Fiends, which will make the combo count perpetually stack. You will get the Achievement soon enough.
- When you head deep enough into the cave, the ground will begin to rumble, and the mid-boss fight will begin.
-
Sub-Boss: Amazonian Death Worm
- TIP: The Worm will periodically speed through the cave, dragging you with it if you're in the way. The basic idea is to pop out of one of the side-rooms and face it head on with the Dragon Sword.
- Stay hidden in one of the side-rooms until you are ready to attempt to attack the Worm.
- NOTE: The Worm will not attack with any consistency in terms of left to right. You'll know it's getting close when the ground starts to shake.
- TIP: One effective strategy is to go into the hall, wait for the ground to start rumbling, then cast the Art of the Flame Phoenix Ninpo. With the Phoenix Ninpo casted, charge your Dragon Sword up to red (hold Y). Then when you hear the worm coming, wait a couple of seconds and unleash the technique. No matter what way he's coming from, you'll likely stun him either with the Ninpo or your attack. Once he's stopped, run close and get in a couple good strong slashes. Then Reverse Wind non stop away from him until you've made it into a cave. If he bites/drags you, Reverse Wind non stop and you'll actually escape with very little health loss.
- TIP: Many of the eggs contain full Ninpo rejuvenation. Try and begin your battle near the cave with three egg sacks and use them once the battle begins.
- Once the boss as been defeated, farm any remaining beetles and any eggs for orbs

- Drop down the pit, make a save at the save point and head down the path toward the water.
- Worms will spawn from the water. The Flying Swallow technique is effective against them. Do not get to close as they will grab you in their mouth and do significant damage. Keep moving. They also have a powerful long range projectile attack. If you can spare any Ninpo use them here, as the worms can be troublesome.
- After defeating the worms pick up the Crystal Skull on the shore up from the the pond.
- Follow the path on the other side of the pond. You will have to go through brush and navigate a few sharp turns. Look for a corpse in the weeds which will have the Vigoorian Flail weapon. Get it.
- See the full Vigoorian Flail combo list below.
- Continue on to a second body of water, which is populated by leaping Blood Eels. Fall into the water when you see an opening and immediately open rapid fire with the Gatline Spear Gun, as you would with any underwater foe.
- After all the Eels are dead, explore the island on the left side of the pond. there is a corpse with a Devil Way Mushroom and a chest with the Jewel of the Demon Seal. Use it.
- Climb up the stair ramp and head into the plaza to make a quick save at the save point. Also, restock at the Muramasa shop.
- When you are ready, examine the wall/door ahead which will spawn a crowd of Chainsaw Bazooka Zombies.
- TIP: The Chainsaw Bazooka Zombies are large, and so cannot be launched. They move slowly, but are quite powerful, and have a devastating bazooka ranged attack. Hit them with quick combo attacks and then back off for a reset. They tend to stay in groups but if you can manage to isolate one of them, do as much damage as possible before the rest catch up to you. Use the Eclipse Scythe to quickly take them out.
- You'll notice that the Blood Eels have respawned. This is an easy opportunity to backtrack, drop down into the water and farm them for Yellow Orbs using the Gatline Spear Gun. They gave us around 13,000 Yellow Orbs.
- Head back to the shop and go on a shopping spree. The boss is right around the corner so stock up on the essentials. Head through the door and open the chest to the left for a Talisman of Rebirth. You can still access the save point so use it to preserve your TALISMAN for later use.
- Head back to the crate and turn right. Dive into the water and swim through the tunnel. When you emerge head along the banks, which will trigger a cutscene and spawn Chainsaw Bazooka Zombies. If they get range on you they will use their bazookas, so try visit each one quickly, do as much damage as possible and then move on to the next one. Follow the shore line some more, the path will take you back into the jungle.
- There is a gap between the two rock formations, head through until you get to a clearing which will trigger the boss battle.
Boss: Quetzalcoatl
- TIP: Equip the bow and prepare for dodging followed by quick return fire. As soon as the battle begins, take a second to fully charge the BOW and hit one of the bosses with it. It's almost a freebie. If you're fast you can actually get off two fully charged BOW shots in this first few seconds. Take advantage of Ryu's ability to fire while in the air.
- There is a dead body holding arrows for when you run out.
- When the Flying Demons spawn along the battlefield's perimeter, kill them first and foremost. They will mercilessly flank you from either side of the battlefield if left unattended. Use the jump/shoot technique to get off two solid shots in one jump. Flip straight at your desired target, as this raises your accuracy. When the Flying Demons are all defeated, the boss-dragons will be isolated, giving you the opportunity to unleash a couple fully charged bow shots on them.
- TIP: When trying to eliminate the Flying Demons, use R to change the camera's perspective, focus in on each of the Flying Demons individually and then take them out. The camera is actually one of your biggest enemies in this boss fight.
- TIP: Ninpo makes quick work of the smaller opponents but is not effective against the dragons unless they are at close range.
- Do your best to focus on one dragon at a time, but this is difficult since you can't tell them apart and they constantly crisscross.
- WARNING: Stay away from either dragon's tail. If they hit you it's an instant death. The dragons also have two versions of a fireball attack, normal and very slow. The very slow version is extremely damaging, though easy to dodge. Additionally, the dragons have a laser attack, which is very damaging but can be dodged with successive Reverse Wind dodges.
- Tip: If you are feeling extra tactical and are able to line up the shot properly, the arrow will pierce both of the large dragons and take a chunk of health from both. Good luck with this one robin hood.
- When both of the dragons are defeated the chapter ends, triggering a cutscene.
