The 2009 musical drama film Nine is based on the stage musical of the same name, which won a Tony Award in 1982. That musical was, in turn, based loosely on the Federico Fellini classic 8 1/2, a semi-autobiographical movie about a frustrated director dealing with the various women in his life. Nine was directed by Rob Marshall and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as filmmaker Guido Contini.
Nine was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Penelope Cruz, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood and Best Original Song for "Take It All." The film was also nominated for numerous Golden Globe Awards, but did not win any awards.

Wesley Morris from The Boston Globe says,
"The best that can be said about “Nine” is that its affections are sincere, though you could say the same about its hero, who has the misfortune of being in a movie that’s an even worse mess than he is."
Marshall Fine from Hollywood and Fine says,
"But this movie version doesn’t seem to have any mojo going for it, despite strong showings by its cast. “Nine” ultimately doesn’t give you a compelling reason to root for it."
