  • Nicklas Backstrom is a professional ice hockey player from Sweden and is currently playing center for with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League. Backstrom was a top NHL draft entry in the 2006, selected 4th, he became the 4th-highest drafted Swede by the Washington Capitals following Mats Sundin 1st, Daniel Sedin 2nd and Henrik Sedin in 3rd. He played his first game on April 6, 2006 against Norway and was one of the youngest Swedish players in the Ice Hockey World Championship tournament.

    Nicklas's father, Anders Backstrom, is also a widely known Swedish hockey player who played 10 seasons for Brynäs IF and brother Kristoffer, also a hockey player, played for the Swedish team Hammarby IF.

    Nicklas has represented Sweden in four international competitions, playing in both the world junior championship and four games of the world championship helping Sweden win the gold in 2006. Backstrom was named rookie of the year in the Swedish league, and was the best forward on the team in 2005. Nicklas ranks second on the Washington Capitals team and 2nd among the NHL rookies with 64 points.
