In the 2009-2010 season, teams were very busy before the Olympic trade freeze which ran from February 12 to February 28. Teams may also trade after the Olympics, however must complete all trades by March 3, 2010.

March 2, 2010, Trades

Montreal Canadiens acquire Aaron Pulashaj (AHL) from the St. Louis Blues for Matt D'Agostini.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Luca Caputi and Marton Skoula from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Alex Pokikarovsky.

Chicago Blackhawks acquire Nick Boynton from the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations.

Edmonton Oilers acquire Matt Marquart from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Cody Wild.

Anaheim Ducks receive Nathan Oystrick and a conditional draft pick in 2011 from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Evgeny Artyukhin. In a late move before the Olympics trade freeze, the Minnesota Wild sent Kim Johnsson and Nick Leddy to Chicago Blackhawks for Cam Barker.

Also just before the Olympics trade freeze, the Ottawa Senators trades Alex Picard and a second round draft pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Matt Cullen.

On the evening of February 9, 2010, the Atlanta Thrashers traded Kari Lehtonen to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Ivan Vishnevskiy and a fourth-round draft pick. The trade is bringing speculation that fellow Stars netminder Marty Turco may be on the move, especially as he is set to become a free agent on July 1.http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nhl/news/story?id=4901362

Bob Gainey stepped down as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens on February 8, 2010, with Pierre Gauthier taking over.

On the morning of February 6, 2010, the Detroit Red Wings traded Ville Leino to the Philadelphia Flyers for a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen.

The New York Rangers traded for Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Christopher Higgins and Ales Kotalik late on February 1, 2010.http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/scott_cullen/?ID=308649

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary were busy on January 31, 2010, moving a total of seven players. Star defenseman Dion Phaneuf went to the Leafs along with Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie with the Flames receiving Ian White, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers in return.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4874486

The Maple Leafs also acquired veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks on January 31, 2010, following Giguere waiving the no-trade clause in his contract. Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala were sent to Anaheim for Giguere.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4874486

While many teams like to keep their news of trades and other transactions to themselves, a number of NHL insiders work very hard to bring news of such moves to the public in advance of the transactions being finalized. • 3:50 p.m.: Carolina Hurricanes send Justin Williams to the Los Angeles Kings for Patrick O'Sullivan; Carolina then trades O'Sullivan to the Edmonton Oilers for Erik Cole; Oilers also reportedly acquired Ales Kotalik

• 3:45 p.m.: Anaheim Ducks sending Travis Moen and Kent Huskins to the San Jose Sharks for Nick Bonnino, Tim Pihlmeye and a conditional draft pick

• 3:10 p.m.: Toronto Maple Leafs trade Dominic Moore to the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round draft pick

• 3:00 p.m.: Phoenix Coyotes reportedly sending Derek Morris to the New York Rangers for Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes and Dmitri Kalinin

• 3:00 p.m.: Deadline has officially passes, however trades may still be announced.

• 2:55 p.m.: Florida Panthers will not trade Jay Bouwmeester

• 2:50 p.m.: Rumors swirling that the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to flip Martin Gerber, who they picked up this morning off waivers

• 2:45 p.m.: Toronto Maple Leafs send Nikolai Antropov to the New York Rangers for a second-round pick, plus a conditional draft pick

• 2:45 p.m.: Phoenix Coyotes send Daniel Carcillo to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scottie Upshall

• 2:35 p.m.: 25 minutes left, with only eight trades completed so far. Could be the slowest trade deadline in nearly a decade.

• 2:00 p.m.: New York Islanders reportedly trade Bill Guerin to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional draft pick

• 1:50 p.m.: Peter Forsberg will reportedly announce his retirement tonight in Colorado, Colorado Avalanche denying that rumor

• 1:30 p.m.: 90 minutes left before the deadline.

• 1:25 p.m.: Tampa Bay Lightning send Mark Recchi to the Boston Bruins for Martins Karsums and Matt Lashoff

• 1:15 p.m.: TRADE DECLINED -- Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly sending Dominic Moore to the Chicago Blackhawks

• 1:00 p.m.: Toronto Maple Leafs announcing that goaltender Vesa Toskala will be out for the rest of the season, meaning newly acquired Martin Gerber will see most of the action for the rest of the year

• 12:55 p.m.: Los Angeles Kings re-signing Sean O'Donnell and Erik Ersberg

• 12:40 p.m.: Calgary Flames send Matthew Lombardi and a first-round pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for Olli Jokinen

• 12:35 p.m.: Boston Bruins send Petteri Nokalainen to the Anaheim Ducks for Steve Montador

• 4:05PM: No other trades announced in last 15 minutes

• 3:50PM: Nashville acquires Jan Hlavic from Tampa Bay in exchange for a 7th Round pick.

• 3:45PM: Seems like there are no other major deals coming. TSN reports Montreal is not announcing any other deals today, which means many Habs fans will be placed on "24 hour suicide watch"... If Forsberg has anything left in the tank (sat out so far this season), then Colorado will not only make the playoffs, but become a big contender in a crowded Western Conference... surprised Calgary didn't make any moves...

• 3:31PM: Anaheim acquires J.S. Aubin from Los Angeles in exchange for a draft pick.

• 3:27PM: Winners right now: Colorado, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Jose, and Washington. Avs added blue line depth plus signing Forsberg helps until Sakic is back; love the Stars adding Richards, nice deal by Brett Hull; Pens show they're going for it this year getting Hossa; Sharks power play will be even more dangerous with Campbell on the blue line; Caps, 5 points out of a playoff spot and the Southeast Division lead, make bold moves getting Fedorov, Huet, and Cooke.

• 3:26PM: Losers right now: Columbus, Montreal, and Toronto. Columbus is only 5 points out of the playoffs right now but have traded away Fedorov and Foote; Montreal, right now a playoff team, trades a known commodity in Huet and have no proven guy between the pipes, and also fails to get Marian Hossa; Toronto couldn't convince Sundin to waive 'no trade' and followed that up by NOT dealing Jason Blake or other big name players.

• 3:21PM: Anaheim acquires Marc-Andre Bergeron from NY Islanders in exchange for a 3rd Round Draft pick

• 3:20PM: Phoenix acquires Marcel Hossa and Al Montoya from NY Rangers in exchange for Josh Gratton, David Leneveu and Fred Sjostrom.

• 3:18PM: Florida acquires Chad Kilger from Toronto in exchange for a 3rd Round Draft pick

• 3:15PM: Red Wings deal for a defenseman from the Kings, but not the one we thought would be moving: Rob Blake remains in LA - for now...

• 3:14PM: Detroit acquires Brad Stuart from Los Angeles in exchange for 2008 2nd and 4th round picks.

• 3:12PM: Waiting to see also if Montreal is going to make another deal to acquire a goaltender to replace Huet. If not, it means they are counting on 20-year old Carey Price to carry the load.

• 3:10PM: Minnesota acquires Chris Simon from NY Islanders in exchange for a draft choice

• 3:08PM: Surprised that Detroit hasn't made a deal for a defenseman, considering that both Rafalski and Lidstrom are on the injured list and Osgood isn't playing as well as earlier in the season.

• 3:06PM: Pittsburgh is going feel like not only are they getting a boost from acquiring Hossa at the deadline, but also getting Crosby back from the injured list.

• 3:00PM: DEADLINE HAS PASSED - awaiting other deals being currently processed by the league

• 2:58PM: Pittsburgh acquires Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis from Atlanta in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Angelo Esposito, Erik Christensen and a 1st Round draft choice. - Huge move by Pittsburgh, putting Hossa with Malkin and Crosby.

• 2:54PM: Pittsburgh acquires Hal Gill from Toronto in exchange for a pair of 2008 draft picks

• 2:53PM: NY Rangers acquires Christan Backman from St. Louis in exchange for a draft pick

• 2:50PM: TSN indicating as many as 6 teams are inquiring about Marian Hossa from Atlanta.

• 2:44PM: Still a lull before the deadline as many of the GM's are on the phones right now. Apparently Buffalo offered Campbell $18 million for 3 years which was rejected, and that's why Campbell was dealt to San Jose. I like Dallas acquiring Richards, a former Conn Smythe Trophy winner.

• 2:34PM: So far it seems that both the Capitals and the Avalanche are "buyers" today. Caps get Fedorov and Huet; Avs get Salei and Foote for the blueline, and signed Peter Forsberg to a 1-year deal last night. Heavy rumors right now are that Hossa is going to be dealt to either Pittsburgh or one of the western teams.

• 2:25PM: Players rumored to be moving today include: Bobby Holik, Marian Hossa, and Olli Jokinen. Mats Sundin will not waive his 'no trade' clause and will stay in Toronto.
