NHL Trade Deadline

Held annually after the NHL All-Star Game or Winter Olympics, the National Hockey League trade deadline is the last day that NHL teams are permitted to trade players before the end of the season. Many teams use the day to gain last-minute players to increase their roster heading into the NHL playoffs while others use the day to trade away players in exchange for cash or NHL Draft selections to improve future teams.

The 2009-2010 NHL Trade Deadline is March 3, 2010. Trades must be submitted to the league before 3:00 p.m. EST on deadline day. The record for number of deadline day trades is 25, which occurred in three consecutive seasons between 2005-06 and 2007-08. Last year established a record number of players part of deadline day deals with 47.

• 3:27 p.m.: Florida Panthers acquire Mathieu Roy from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Matt Rust.
• 3:20 p.m.: Vancouver Canucks get Andrew Alberts from the carolina Hurricanes for a third-round draft pick.
• 3:15 p.m.: Anaheim Ducks acquiring yet another goaltender, Joey MacDonald from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011.
• 3:08 p.m.: Washington Capitals grab Joe Corvo from the Carolina Hurricanes for Brian Pothier and Oskar Osala.
• 3:05 p.m.: Lee Stempniak going to the Phoenix Coyotes from the Toronto Maple Leafs for fourth- and seventh-round draft picks.
• 3:05 p.m.: Deadline has passed. At the moment, I would rate winners today are Carolina, Phoenix, and Washington. Losers would be Vancouver, Edmonton, and Montreal.
• 3:03 p.m.: Columbus Blue Jackets trade Fredrik Modin to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations.
• 3:00 p.m.: Trade deadline has passed. Stay tuned for late deals submitted before the deadline but pending NHL approval.
• 2:55 p.m.: Dan Hamhuis, who was heavily involved in trade rumors, will stay with the Nashville Predators.
• 2:53 p.m.: Toronto Maple Leafs ironing out the details of a trade of Lee Stempniak.
• 2:50 p.m.: Columbus Blue Jackets send defenseman Milan Jurcina back to the Washington Capitals for a sixth-round draft pick.
• 2:50 p.m.: Word coming in that Ray Whitney will not move today, as has been rumored.
• 2:45 p.m.: Remember, there are sometimes last-minute deals are filed before the deadline but the NHL sometimes processes the paperwork after the actual deadline
• 2:39 p.m.: Buffalo Sabres sending Clarke MacArthur to the Atlanta Thrashers for third- and fourth-round draft picks.
• 2:25 p.m.: Columbus Blue Jackets trade Raffi Torres to the Buffalo Sabres for Nathan Paetsch and a second-round draft pick. -- Nice pick up for the Sabres. Torres will give them even more scoring depth and will add on the power play unit.
• 2:17 p.m.: Chicago, Washington, and Philly all need goaltending help and looks like they are not doing so. Montreal noticeably quiet today.
• 2:00 p.m.: One hour to go before the deadline, and it's clear the timing of the Olympic break has impacted this year's activity, or lack thereof. No big name deals yet, and not expecting one either.
• 2:00 p.m.: Calgary Flames sending backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney to the Anaheim Ducks for Vesa Toskala.
• 1:45 p.m.: Eric Belanger traded from the Minnesota Wild to the Washington Capitals for a second-round draft pick.
• 1:40 p.m.: Will Tomas Kaberle be moved? I think it's 70/30 he won't. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period magazine reports that an NHL executive told him a Kaberle deal will be done today. Love the Halpern pick up for the Kings depending on what exactly they give up.
• 1:30 p.m.: Tampa Bay Lightning send Jeff Halpern to the Los Angeles Kings for Teddy Purcell and a third-round draft pick.
• 1:30 p.m.: Vancouver Canucks trade Mathieu Schneider to the Phoenix Coyotes for Sean Zimmerman and a conditional sixth-round draft pick.
• 1:00 p.m.: Two Hours to go until the deadline, and things haven't picked up the way a lot of us thought. Martin Biron is most likely name player to be moved next two hours; can Chicago and Washington fans tell me they're confident with their goaltending for the playoffs? I don't...
• 12:50 p.m.: Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers swap minor leaguers, with Kris Newbury going to New York and Jordan Owens going to Detroit.
• 12:43 p.m.: Phoenix Coyotes send Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter to the Colorado Avalanche for Wojtek Wolski. -- Coyotes sources I've talked to felt that Mueller regressed and needed a change of scenary
• 12:38 p.m.: Yan Stanstny traded to the Vancouver Canucks with the St. Louis Blues receiving Pierre-Cedric Lebrie.
• 12:25 p.m.: Washington Capitals acquire Scott Walker from the Carolina Hurricanes, reportedly for a seventh-round draft pick. -- Walker is a good character guy who will fit into that room very well
• 12:00 p.m.: Edmonton Oilers claims Ryan Jones from the Nashville Predators off waivers.
• Three hours until the deadline, and my guess is that business will start picking up in the next hour
• 11:45 a.m.: Carolina Hurricanes send Aaron Ward to the Anaheim Ducks for Justin Pogge and a fourth-round draft selection. -- Ward brings Stanley Cup experience and veteran leadership to Anaheim - feels like they still need to bring in another blueliner
• 11:35 a.m.: Florida Panthers send Dennis Seidenberg and Matthew Bartowski to the Boston Bruins for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a second-round draft pick.
• 11:00 a.m.: Toronto Maple Leafs send Marton Skoula, who was just acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday, to the New Jersey Devils for a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.
• 10:30 a.m.: Derek Morris traded to the Phoenix Coyotes from the Boston Bruins in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2011. -- 1st deal of the day features the often-traded Derek Morris returning to Phoenix. Interesting to see the Coyotes as buyers for a change.

• On March 2: Montreal Canadiens acquire Aaron Pulashaj (AHL) from the St. Louis Blues for Matt D'Agostini.

If Forsberg has anything left in the tank (sat out so far this season), then Colorado will not only make the playoffs, but become a big contender in a crowded Western Conference... surprised Calgary didn't make any moves...

• 3:31PM: Anaheim acquires J.S. Aubin from Los Angeles in exchange for a draft pick.

• 3:27PM: Winners right now: Colorado, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Jose, and Washington. Avs added blue line depth plus signing Forsberg helps until Sakic is back; love the Stars adding Richards, nice deal by Brett Hull; Pens show they're going for it this year getting Hossa; Sharks power play will be even more dangerous with Campbell on the blue line; Caps, 5 points out of a playoff spot and the Southeast Division lead, make bold moves getting Fedorov, Huet, and Cooke.

• 3:26PM: Losers right now: Columbus, Montreal, and Toronto. Columbus is only 5 points out of the playoffs right now but have traded away Fedorov and Foote; Montreal, right now a playoff team, trades a known commodity in Huet and have no proven guy between the pipes, and also fails to get Marian Hossa; Toronto couldn't convince Sundin to waive 'no trade' and followed that up by NOT dealing Jason Blake or other big name players.

• 3:00PM: DEADLINE HAS PASSED - awaiting other deals being currently processed by the league

• 2:58PM: Pittsburgh acquires Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis from Atlanta in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Angelo Esposito, Erik Christensen and a 1st Round draft choice. - Huge move by Pittsburgh, putting Hossa with Malkin and Crosby.

• 2:54PM: Pittsburgh acquires Hal Gill from Toronto in exchange for a pair of 2008 draft picks

• 2:53PM: NY Rangers acquires Christan Backman from St. Louis in exchange for a draft pick

• 2:50PM: TSN indicating as many as 6 teams are inquiring about Marian Hossa from Atlanta.

• 2:44PM: Still a lull before the deadline as many of the GM's are on the phones right now. Apparently Buffalo offered Campbell $18 million for 3 years which was rejected, and that's why Campbell was dealt to San Jose. I like Dallas acquiring Richards, a former Conn Smythe Trophy winner.

• 2:34PM: So far it seems that both the Capitals and the Avalanche are "buyers" today. Caps get Fedorov and Huet; Avs get Salei and Foote for the blueline, and signed Peter Forsberg to a 1-year deal last night. Heavy rumors right now are that Hossa is going to be dealt to either Pittsburgh or one of the western teams.
