NHL Awards

The NHL Awards includes all of the end-of-season awards for the National Hockey League. Most of the awards are voted upon at the end of each regular season, while others are statistic-based awards. All awards are presented at a ceremony each June.

In 2010, the finalists for the awards based on voting were announced as the 2010 NHL Playoffs were taking place in April. The awards were handed out on June 23 at a ceremony from the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ceremony aired live on Versus in the United States and CBC in Canada.

The 2009 NHL Awards were presented on June 18, 2009, from Las Vegas. The finalists were announced in April and May of 2009.

NHL Awards History

The first trophy ever awarded was the Stanley Cup, which began as a challenge based award in 1893. This trophy changed in 1927, when it began going to the National Hockey League Champion each year.

Several trophies were added to the mix in the following 80 years, bringing the total to 22 current awards. These include four awards going to teams, with the remaining 18 going to individual players.

Selection Process

Several of the awards are voted on, such as the Hart Memorial Trophy for the league MVP, selected by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Other awards are statistically based, such as the Art Ross Trophy, given to the league's top point scorer or the Presidents' Trophy, given to the team that finishes the regular season with the best record. The final set of trophies are awarded in the playoffs. The Prince of Wales Trophy and Clarence S. Campbell Bowl are given to the Eastern and Western Conference Champions respectively. The Stanley Cup, the grand prize, is given to the team that wins the Stanley Cup Championship.
