Nguyen Minh Triet is the President of Vietnam. Formerly the head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he was elected president by the National Assembly on June 27, 2006, receiving over 94% of the vote. Though the position of president is a largely ceremonial one in Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Triet is widely seen as a reformer and has been an advocate of economic liberalization and a greater role in international organizations. He has also led a campaign against corruption and organized crime, shutting down notorious crime rings in Ho Chi Minh City. Critics point out that his time in office has been marked by several arrests of political opponents and a severe crackdown on political dissent.
