NFL Playoffs

    • The playoffs consist of four rounds: wild card weekend, division round, conference championships, and the Super Bowl
    • From 1933-1966, there were only playoff games when a tie for a division title happened (nine times total)
    • From 1967-69, there were four divisions in the NFL, so they held two rounds of playoffs to determine league champion and Super Bowl representative
    • The AFL held two divisional championship games: in 1963 and 1968. In 1969, they added the second place team from each of their two divisions for a two round playoff
    • Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, there have been playoffs after every season
  • Following the regular season, the top six teams in each conference of the National Football League meet in a single-elimination playoff. The winners conference championship games go on to play in the Super Bowl.

    The 2008 NFL playoffs began with the wild card weekend on January 3 and 4, 2009. The finale, Super Bowl XLIII was played on February 1, 2009, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, and featured the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers defeating the NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals.
