  • Story

The player is the head coach of a NFL team and must make all coaching decisions. Players can elect to focus on and off the field tasks by making roster moves, negotiating contracts, participating in the NFL Draft, and scouting prospects. Players can also control the on field activities by calling plays, making substitutions, and even drawing up new plays to defeat the opponent.
  • Gameplay

NFL Head Coach 09 will offer a number of improvements from the original NFL Head Coach game and be overall much more realistic. The player ratings have been refined to be as accurate as possible and will change as they progress throughout their career. Also, individual coaches and teams will now have their tendencies and strategies factor into the game. For example, a coach or team who likes to spread the field with players who are very quick would be more likely to sign a fast wide receiver than a blocking tight end. Finally, the NFL Draft experience will be much more authentic and include improved trading of draft picks, better computer AI in making selections, and two announcers to provide commentary and analysis of draft picks.IGN: NFL Head Coach 09 Features (April 16, 2008)
  • Madden 09 Bundle

When NFL Head Coach 09 was originally announced, EA Sports planned to release the game exclusively in a bundle with Madden NFL 09 in the 20th Anniversary Madden Collector's Edition. It was speculated that the reason for this decision was in part due to the limited success of the original NFL Head Coach game, and in part because of pricing concerns. The popular consensus was that the game might be able to succeed as an "add-on" to Madden, but would most likely fail if released as a full priced game. Nevertheless, EA Sports reversed their decision two weeks later and announced that it would still bundle the game with Madden 09 in the 20th Anniversary Collector's Agency, but would then release the game as a standalone game on September 2, 2008.
