The NFL Antitrust Exemption was created by the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 in response to a lawsuit. The creation of this act has enabled teams to pool their broadcasting rights to enable the league to make specific contracts with broadcasters on their behalf. This has also enabled the blackout rule that limits broadcasting of home games in the home team's local area.
