Newfoundland dogs are very large and have long hair. They were named after the Canadian island of the same name in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Although large, they are considered mild mannered and patient.

Health Problems

Their long hair requires daily to weekly brushing to reduce shedding. Their oily coat does not require bathing, but dry shampoo may be used when necessary.Dog Breed Info Center: Newfoundland Because of their massive size and weight, they also may suffer from hip problems.

Sports or Activities

Newfoundlands have a water-resistant coat and webbed feet which helps them swim. They are often used as search and rescue dogs, specifically rescuing people in water. Newfoundlands can be shown in the working class or kept as pets as they are gentle, protective and easy to train.
