Eight seasons had come and gone since the Bronx Bombers had won their last title in 2000 with a 4-2 series win against the New York Mets. In 2001, the Yankees were defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks in seven games and would lose again in 2003; falling to the Florida Marlins in six games. One the most agonizing playoff disappointments for the Yankees would come in the 2004 playoffs as they would lose in seven games to the Boston Red Sox after leading the series 3-0. The Yankees would finally end their drought as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to capture the franchise's 27th World Series title.
