New York Stories is a 1989 film comprised of three different stories, each directed by a powerhouse filmmaker. Martin Scorcese directed the first story entitled Life Lessons, and it stars Nick Nolte and Rosanna Arquette. The second story, Life Without Zoe, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The final story is Woody Allen's Oedipus Wrecks, starring Allen and Mae Questel.
Plot Synopsis
The first New York story is Life Lessons by Scorcese, and it centers around a self-indulgent artist named Lionel and his quasi-artist assistant Paulette. Although Lionel loves Paulette, he thinks she is a horrible artist and out of loyalty to his craft, cannot lie to her about this fact.
The second story, Life Without Zoe, tells the tale of 12-year-old Zoe who runs amok at the Sherry-Netherland hotel while her parents travel the world. It is directed by Coppola.
Woody Allen's contribution is entitled Oedipus Wrecks. This story centers around a Jewish lawyer, played by Allen, and his turbulent relationship with his mother.
Reviews
"All three films are in different ways concerned with how love affects their central characters, and all three are predictably stylish." —TV Guidehttp://movies.tvguide.com/new-york-stories/review/127696
"Each film is distinct from the other in its tone, which in some ways is good, but it also hinders any rhythm from emerging other than the fact that this club loves a certain city." — Ryan Cracknell for Movie Views
