Cocaine Tape
On March 28, 2009, the New York Post declined to purchase a video that allegedly showed VP Biden's daughter, Ashley Biden, snorting cocaine at a Delaware house party in March of 2009. Lawyers for the man that shot the footage showed the Post 90 seconds of the 43 minute tape, which Biden allegedly knew was being filmed.New York Post: Friend of Biden's Daughter Tape of her Allegedly Doing Cocaine (March 28, 2009)
Tabloid
The term tabloid originally referred only to the size of a newspaper and not its content. Tabloid dimensions are approximately 11" x 17". Because tabloids are smaller than the standard broadsheet newspaper, the news in them is condensed, which helped to give the term the additional meaning of less substantive, gossipy news.
Controversial Cartoon
On February 18, 2009, the newspaper published a cartoon a police offer shooting a chimpanzee drawn by Sean Delonas. The cartoon was published after a police officer shot a chimpanzee who attacked a woman in Connecticut a few days earlier. Another officers in the cartoon said "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill." The cartoon drew criticism from many people who interpreted it as racist, because of racist stereotypes that compare African-Americans to monkeys and because President Barack Obama was one of the main people behind the bill. Reverend Al Sharpton was among those critical of the cartoon. Editor-in-chief Col Allan defended the cartoon and said it "broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy".Times: Protesters picket New York Post over chimp cartoon (February 19, 2009)New York Daily News: New York Post has gotta apologize over offensive chimpanzee cartoon (February 18, 2009)
