The New York Jets play professional football in the East Division of the AFC in the National Football League. They share Giants Stadium with the New York Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The team was originally founded in 1960 in the American Football League as the New York Titans. The team was purchased in 1963 and renamed to the New York Jets. Three years later they entered the National Football League when the NFL and AFL merged in 1966.
The Jets acquired legendary quarterback Joe Namath in 1965, who helped them reach Super Bowl III. The Jets prevailed, becoming the first AFL team to win the Super Bowl since the merger. Namath was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.

The Jets waived Joe Namath following the 1966 season. The Jets failed to have another successful season from 1967 to 1981, earning more losses than wins each year. It wasn't until 1998 that the Jets won the AFC East divisional playoffs again. Their first Super Bowl win remains their only to date as of 2009.
On August 7, 2008, the Jets acquired Brett Favre and agreed to pickup his reported $12 million contract in exchange for a conditional draft pick.
