Current Lieutenant Governor, David Paterson, is set to become Governor of New York on March 17, 2008. Patterson will assume office following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer in the wake of the Spitzer Prostitution Ring scandal. Paterson will continue to serve the rest of Spitzer's term, set to end December 31, 2010. The first governor of the state of New York, George Clinton, was elected in 1777. He served for 21 years.
