New Riders of the Purple Sage

  • New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American, country rock band founded in 1969 as an offshoot of and frequent supporter of The Grateful Dead.
  • Career

The original line-up of the New Riders of the Purple Sage, which was formed to combine Bakersfield]] country music with San Francisco psychedelic music, included members of the Grateful Dead with founder John Dawson. By the time their first album was released, the line-ups of both bands had separated and solidified. The New Riders went through several line up changes before finally disbanding in 1997. In 2005 a new version, with the blessing of surviving members of the original, took up the name and continues to record and perform.
