New Line Cinema was founded by Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne in 1967. It was one of the major American film studios in Hollywood until February 28, 2008 when Time Warner merged New Line into a division of Warner Brothers. Shaye and Lynne stepped down and the 40-year-old independent studio was officially merged under the Warner Brothers umbrella.
History
New Line Cinema began having success in the 1970s in video distribution. The studio finally had a commercially successful series with A Nightmare on Elm Street, and soon found more success with other major films as the Austin Powers and the Lord of the Rings trilogies.
