Four new designs of the Lincoln penny will be introduced throughout 2009 to commemorate the 200th birthday of the former United States President.
On May 14, 2009, the second design was introduced in Spencer County, Indiana, Lincoln's childhood home. The tail side depicts an image of a young Abe Lincoln sitting on a log reading a book, an "illustration of Lincoln's love of books and his belief in the value of education."WFIE (IN): New Lincoln Penny on Sale (May 14, 2009) Approximately 20,000 pennies were shipped to Lincoln City, IN for festivities surrounding the introduction of the newly minted coin.

New Coin Designs
The United States Mint unveiled four new penny designs on September 22, 2008. The coins celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, each design focusing on one stage of the President's life. The mint also plans to issue a silver dollar commemorating the date.
