On June 10, 2009, officials confirmed that the body found earlier in the month was that of Neveah Buchanan. Confirmation came as a result of DNA testing by the Michigan state police crime lab. Body Found
On June 4, 2009, fishermen near River Raisin found the body of a child believed to be that of Nevaeh Buchanan. The body was found only seven miles from where she was last seen playing. Local news reported that the body was found in a shallow grave covered with quick setting cement. Authorities held a news conference June 5 at 10:30 am. According to her mother, Buchanan was playing outside of their home with a friend. The friend came inside to tell the mother that Buchanan was playing with her scooter, but when the mother went outside, the girl was missing. After the disappearance, Buchanan's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, was given a lie-detector test, which she failed. Jennifer Buchanan claimed her lack of sleep caused the failed result. The mother was also questioned about her romantic relationship with 39-year-old George Kennedy, who served time in prison for home invasion and third-degree criminal sexual conduct from 2002 to 2007. Michigan authorities have reported that they are looking into the alibi of the owner of the van that investigators believe was used to abduct Neviaeh. 48-year-old Roy Smith, a convicted sex offender, was taken in for questioning on May 27, 2009. The FBI has received a tip that Buchanan may have been spotted in Columbus, Ohio, on the evening of May 25, with a heavy-set woman whose identity remains unknown.
