Neuroscience

Categories: Science | Health | Education
    • Pioneers include Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Camillo Golgi, Andrew Huxley, Alan Lloyd Hodgkin, Donald Olding Hebb, Charles Scott Sherrington and Otto Loewi
    • Some manuscripts date back to 5000 BC
    • Studies of the brain took off after the invention of the microscope and cell staining techniques that exposed the structures of neurons and glia
    • There are about 100,000,000,000 neurons in a human adult brain
    • There are about 1,000,000,000,000,000 synapses in a human adult brain
  • Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system. Studies branch into many fields such as biology, chemistry, and psychology.
  • Glossary

    1. Neurons: Nerve cells capable of sending or processing information via electrochemical signals
    2. Glia: Non-neuronal cells in the nervous system that aid in neuromodulation, physical support, nutrition, neuron signal transduction and remove debris
    3. Neural Network: A network of neurons that transmit electric signals and enable complex neural processes
    4. Ganglion: Tissues that contain mainly somas and dendrites of neurons, usually referring to the peripheral nervous system
    5. Grey Matter: A mixture of cells and tissues in the brain that contains neuronal cell bodies
    6. Nervous System: The network of neurons, glia and other cells that communicate via electrochemical signals and process and relay information from the environment for an organism
