A neti pot is a pot with a handle, lid, and spout used as a health aid to clear out nasal passages. The pot is used to pour either a warm salt water solution or a commercial saline solution into one nostril, allowing it to rinse the nasal cavity and drain out the other nostril. This remedy is commonly used by people who suffer from allergies, sinus conditions, or have colds and has been noted to help loosen secretions and irrigate the passages.http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/neti-pot/AN01755 Many people who suffer from regular sinus dryness swear by using neti pots long-term on a daily basis as an alternative to antihistamines, antibiotics, or other traditional medicinal treatments.http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/03/fashion/03skin.html
The neti pot dates back over 1,000 years to Indian yogic traditions. It had never caught on in Western culture, until it gained exposure when Dr. Mehmet Oz introduced it on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Dr. Oz stated that a warm salt water solution, when allowed to flow through the nasal passages, can reduce cold symptoms, flu symptoms and other nasal irritations.International Herald Tribune: Short, Stout, Has a Handle on Colds (January 8, 2008)
Neti pots remain somewhat controversial regarding how effective they are. Some skeptics have asserted that they are akin to snake oil treatments and fads. Others swear that daily use produces long-lasting nasal health and wellness.http://www.nycskeptics.org/blog/neti-pot-or-nutty-pot/
These small pots, which resemble teapots or gravy boats, can be made out of a variety of materials including ceramics, glass, or metal. They are available for purchase at most new age supply shops, through many yoga supply stores, and even at large discount chain stores. Prices vary based on the size and quality of the pot.
How to Use a Neti Pot
First clean your pot thoroughly and then fill it with warm water. Add 1/8 teaspoon of non-iodized or Neti Pot salt to distilled or boiled and cooled tap water, and stir. Lean over a bathtub or sink and tilt your head to the right. Place the spout into the upper nostril and open your mouth slightly. Begin to slowly pour the water into the nostril. The water should flow out of your lower nostril. Continue until you have emptied the pot. Lean over the sink or tub and forcefully blow through your nose. Repeat on the left side. It is recommended to remove all traces of the salt water from your nose, by bending at the waist and dropping your head toward the floor. As you turn your head from left to right, blow forcefully through your nose.Mayo Clinic: What is a Neti Pot?YouTube Video: Neti Pot
How to Use a Neti Pot
This video demonstrates how to mix a proper salt water solution for a neti pot, and then how to use the device to cleanse the nasal passages. The video also shows some key exercises to be performed after neti pot use to ensure that all of the solution has been evacuated from the nose.
Demonstration of How Not to Use a Neti Pot
This humorous silent video shows an "every man" trying out a neti pot, first with standard salt water solutions, then with black coffee, and then with whiskey. Neither of the latter two selections are ever recommended to be used with a neti pot, and as indicated by the man's reaction to the whiskey, using a neti pot in unintended ways can cause pain.
