  Much of the land in the Netherlands is reclaimed from the North Sea and is below sea level. In order to keep the country from flooding, a complex series of dikes and sea walls have been constructed, and the Dutch are world-leaders in dike technology.   Because of the flat nature of the Netherlands' geography, the bicycle is the primary form of transportation in the country. In fact, there are more bicycles in the Netherlands than there are people.
