Nestor Kirchner

  • Nestor Kirchner is the former President of Argentina. Despite receiving only 22% of the vote, he won the 2003 election by default after his opponent, the incumbent Carlos Menem, withdrew from the race. Expected by many to be a lame-duck president, Kircher surprised many when he launched a campaign against powerful military and police officials, demanding greater transparency in government and overturning amnesty laws protecting those accused of torture and assassinations. He also announced the cancellation of Argentina's debts to the International Monetary Fund on December 15, 2005, an action that has caused much controversy in Argentina and among analysts around the world. Though he did not run for reelection in 2007, his wife Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner won the election and is now president.
