  • Democracy in Nepal

Democracy in Nepal has had a rocky history. Although a constitutional monarchy was put in place in 1990, a rebellion by the Maoists and the continuing power held by Nepal's monarchy interfered with this process. In November 2006, the Maoists and the government declared peace. Nepal officially ended its monarchy May 28, 2008. In August of that year, the new Republic of Nepal elected the Maoist former revolutionary Pushpa Kamal Dahal, commonly known as Prachanda, as its first Prime Minister.
