Nelson Mandela was the first president of South Africa to be elected in fully representative elections in 1994. Former leader of the African National Congress, Mandela is well known for his influential role in the anti-Apartheid movement.
Mandela sent a statement on Michael Jackson which was read during the opening of the July 7, 2009, memorial at the Staples Center by Smokey Robinson.

Arthur Ashe Courage Award
Mandela will be awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on July 19, 2009, for his efforts to reconcile white and black South Africans at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted by South Africa. His dedication has been recognized with numerous awards, notably the Nobel Peace Prize, which he received in 1993.
