The nectarine, native to China, is a round, orange and red fruit with a firm body that is both sweet and slightly tart. It is a hairless species of the peach, caused by a recessive gene. It is called a drupe or stone fruit because it contains a pit in the inside, attached to the flesh. Peaches and nectarines are the second largest produced fruit in the United States, after apples.
