The Northeast Men's Basketball Conference is comprised of twelve teams competing in NCAA Division 1-A. The teams are mainly from small schools from New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. The schools are Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Robert Morris University, Quinnipiac, Mount Saint Mary's, Long Island, St. Francis (PA), Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, St. Francis (NY), Sacred Heart, and Wagner.
The 2008-2009 tournament champion was Robert Morris University which won its way into the NCAA tournament in March with a pulsating 48-46 victory over Mount Saint Mary’s. RMU went on to play Michigan State University in the NCAA tournament, losing in the first round. In the recent past, teams such as Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, and Wagner have made the field of 64 in the NCAA tournaments and have given much higher seeded teams some scares.
In the 2009-2010 season, Robert Morris University is once again atop the league standings, clinching the regular season title with a win over Wagner on February 25, 2010. Quinnipiac has also been a strong contender as well. The Colonials were led by senior forward Rob Robinson and talented freshmen Karon Abraham. Quinnipiac's leading scorers were James Feldeine, who was also the second leading scorer in the NEC conference, and Justin Rutty. The leading scorer in the league in 2010 was Sacred Heart's senior guard Corey Hassan with an average of nearly twenty points per game for his team which sat at the bottom of the NEC standings. RMU was at the top of the standings, hoping to repeat as conference tournament champions. Other teams with strong league records include Mount Saint Mary's and Long Island, and either of those teams could be a factor in the conference tournament in March.
