In the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, all 65 teams were named and seeded on Selection Sunday, March 14, 2010, with the Kentucky Wildcats taking the top seed in the region. The men's tournament opened with the play-in game on March 16, 2010. Dayton, New Orleans, Providence, San Jose, Oklahoma City, Buffalo, Milwaukee, Jacksonville and Spokane served as the host locations for the first and second rounds, which were played from March 18 to March 21.
The East Region Bracket continued from March 25 to March 28 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, hosted by Syracuse University. The winner of those games, the West Virginia Mountaineers, continued on to the 2010 Final Four, held on April 3 and April 5, 2010, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the third-seeded Villanova Wildcats upset the top-seeded Pittsburgh Panthers 78-76 to win the East Region Bracket and earn a trip to the 2009 Final Four. Villanova however lost in the first game of the Final Four to the Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team, who then lost in the title game to the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team.
