NBA All Star Horse Game

  • On February 14, 2009, the Saturday of the NBA's All-Star weekend, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, O.J. Mayo of the Memphis Grizzlies and Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks competed in a version of the popular schoolyard game H-O-R-S-E.

Although Kevin Durant won the competition, most of the 2009 H.O.R.S.E. was dominated by O.J. Mayo. Johnson was eliminated when he attempted an underhand free throw. Durant battled back and eliminated Mayo with a three pointer from the corner to win the competition.

  • The Game of H-O-R-S-E

In H-O-R-S-E, players attempt to make shots from anywhere on the basketball court in a pre-set order. Once the first player has completed a successful shot, the next player must replicate the same shot or they receive a letter, beginning with H and eventually spelling the word "horse." In a three-person game, each player must replicate the previous player's shot, until a round of 3 has been completed or someone misses and receives a letter. If all three players make the shot, the first player would begin the new round with a new shot. A player is eliminated once they receive all five letters spelling the finished word.
