August 7, 2008: Nawaz Sharif, leader of Pakistan Muslim League, and Asif Ali Zardari, head of the Pakistan Peoples' Party, have formally requested that Pervez Musharraf step down as president of Pakistan.

  • Background

Nawaz Sharif was ousted by a military coup led by Pervez Musharraf in 1999. In an attempt to prevent Musharraf from entering the country to join his coup, Sharif rerouted the commercial flight Musharraf was taking. This proved unsuccessful and, after the coup, Sharif was sentenced to life in prison, which was commuted to exile in Saudi Arabia.

He was allowed to return to Pakistan on November 25, 2007, and participated in the 2008 elections. After the results of the election were returned, Sharif agreed to form a coalition government with Asif Ali Zardari and the PPP.
