  • The United States Naval Academy football team plays college football as an independent, meaning they do not belong to any league. Known by their nickname the Midshipmen, the team plays their home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on campus in Annapolis. The program has produced two Heisman Trophy winners in their history: Joe Bellino in 1960 and Roger Staubach in 1963. In 2008, Ken Niumatalolo took over as head coach after Paul Johnson took the head coaching job at Georgia Tech.

The 2008 Midshipmen finished the season with an 8-4 record, including a 36-0 win over Army, and fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 29-19, in the inaugural EagleBank Bowl on December 20, 2008.ESPN.com: Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Navy Midshipmen Box Score, December 20 2008

  • Many If By Sea

The Navy football program has a rich heritage and tradition of producing some of the finest young men to serve our country's military in leadership roles. The school has diversified its offense in recent years, but the bread-and-butter still is through use of the 'wishbone' running formation. In addition to their heated but well-intentioned rivalry with Army, they also regularly play spirited games with Air Force and Rutgers. It also has a famous annual match-up with Notre Dame, and in 2007 they snapped a 43-game losing streak to the Irish.

In addition to Staubach's magnificent career, others that have played memorable parts of Navy football history include Napoleon McCallum, John Dalton, Ron Beagle, Bob Reisnyder, Don Whitmore, Frank Wickhorst, and Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada.
