  • History

William Griffin founded the New York Evening Enquirer in 1926. In 1952, with circulation down to a mere 17,000 copies a week, the paper was purchased by Generoso Pope, Jr. Once Pope took over the paper, the stories became more sensationalized, with editorial content focused on murders and sex. Pope also changed the name from the New York Evening Enquirer to The National Enquirer. The paper's circulation grew rapidly and by 1966 it was selling one million copies per week.

In 1988, Generoso Pope, Jr. passed away and the Enquirer was purchased by GP Group Acquisition Limited Partnership which later became known as the Enquirer/Star Group, Inc.Answers.com: American Media, Inc.
