Nathaniel Hawthorne was a 19th Century American novelist.
Career
Hawthorne published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, anonymously in 1828. In 1837, he published Twice-Told Tales a collection of short stories. His most notable novel, The Scarlet Letter, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels includeing The House of the Seven Gables. In 1853, a political appointment took Hawthorne and his family to Europe until 1860 when he returned to Concord, Massachusettes. Hawthorne died four years later on May 19, 1864.
