Nathan Smith is a musician based in Los Angeles, California. A novice treasure hunter for several years, Smith embarked on a treasure hunt based on research and a book entitled Lost Treasures of American History. Encouraged by what he saw on Google Earth, Smith made a trip to south Texas in order to explore an area near Corpus Christi for a lost shipwreck full of gold. Using metal detector Smith claims he found reading indicating gold and silver, and now wants to dig up the treasure. However, the land where the treasure is supposedly located is private property. In January 2009 Smith took the property owners to court in an attempt to get permission to dig for gold.FOX News: Google Earth Leads Man to 'Buried Treasure' (February 12, 2009)
Navigation Rights
While convinced he has found a lost treasure ship, Smith's struggle began because the location of the ship is on private property. However, according to law, if the creek where the ship is located is navigable, Smith may have a right to exhume the treasure, granting that one does exist. A Texas judge is set to rule on the case sometime in March 2009.FOX News: Google Earth Leads Man to 'Buried Treasure' (February 12, 2009)-
