Nathan Myhrvold served as Microsoft's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for fourteen years. After leaving Microsoft, he co-founded Intellectual Ventures in 2000, a company that he is the current CEO of. Intellectual Ventures is a company that, in some part, funds inventions and attains patents for them. In another major part of their business, they buy patents off the market and license them, obtaining revenue for themselves, their investors, and in some cases, the inventors of the patents.
