Narendra Modi is the Chief Minister in the Indian state, Gujarat. Although Modi's leadership steadily increased economic success in the region, his term has also seen significant violence between Muslims and Hindus.

2. 2001: Becomes Chief Minister after Keshubhai Patel resigns
3. February - May, 2002: Riots between Muslim and Hindu sweep through Gujarat, more than 1000 are killed
4. December, 2002: Re-elected as Chief Minister
5. December 23, 2007: Re-elected to a third term

Modi's leadership in Gujarat brought many social reforms to the region, including improved nutrition, women's rights, and security against terrorism. However, the region also saw significant violence between the local Islamic and Hindu residents. The aftermath of the riots in 2002 led many to call for Modi's resignation, despite his other significant social advances.
