Nantucket History
Nantucket was originally inhabited by Wamponoag Indians. In 1641, Thomas Mayhew Sr. of Watertown, Massachusetts bought Nantucket. The island was part of Dukes County until 1691 when it became a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, after which it became its own county.
At one time, Nantucket was the main Whaling port in the world. The Great Fire of 1846 burned 36 acres, burning through the main section of town. This, coupled with the decline of whaling, meant that Nantucket remained undeveloped until the mid-20th century.
