  • Former professional figure skater Nancy Kerrigan won the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. This came just two months after she was physically attacked at the Olympic trials by a man linked to rival skater Tonya Harding.

  • Physical Attack

    In January of 1994, following practice for the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee by an assailant. It was later revealed that the assailant was was hired by Kerrigan's rival skater Tonya Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly. Kerrigan was unable to compete in the championships, but was awarded a place on the U.S. Olympic team and went on to win the silver medal at the Olympics in Lillehammer.     Harding later plead guilty to hindering the FBI's investigation into the assault case. She was placed on probation, ordered to pay fines and banned for life from competitive skating.
