Nancy Beatie is the wife of Thomas Beatie, the "Pregnant Man." Thomas Beatie was born a woman, but had a sex-change operation (sex reassignment surgery) to become a man. Born Tracy LaGondino, Thomas fell in love with Nancy while living in Hawaii and underwent sexual reassignment surgery, partly because same-sex marriages are not recognized by law in Hawaii. Despite the surgery, Thomas kept his female genitalia. he began the change in 1998, by injecting male hormones like testosterone. In 2002 he had his breasts surgically removed.
Tracy (Thomas) was a finalist in the Miss Teen Hawaii USA contest at the age of 14. In an interview with Barbara Walters, Thomas said as a girl he felt "rough and tumbly" and "didn't like frilly stuff."
