• Background

  On April 3, 2008, social network MySpace announced that it would partner with three major music labels to provide downloadable music and compete with other online music retailers. The labels are Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group.

  In addition to downloadable music, MySpace will offer ringtones, merchandise, and concert tickets, expanding the conventional purview of online music retailers.

  The opening of MySpace Music is a natural move for MySpace; the site has been associated with amateur musicians and established acts since it began in 2003, offering special music accounts and profiles in addition to regular personal accounts. They also sponsor MySpace Secret Shows, which are concerts by established acts that only subscribers of the service are invited to.
