Mwai Kibaki is currently the President of Kenya and formerly held the position of Vice President under Daniel Arap Moi from 1978-1988. When multi-party politics came to Kenya in 1992 Kibaki ran in opposition to his former president. After losing two elections in 1999 and 1997 many thought his political career was over but after Daniel Arap Moi stepped down in 2002, after 24 years in power, was finally elected President after putting together a broad based alliance.
He was sworn into office on December 30, 2002 and again in 2007 after a narrow victory. His opponent, Raila Odinga, demanded a recount of the 2007 election results which resulted in a wave of violence across the country. As part of a power sharing contract, Kibaki announced on April 13, 2008, that he would name Raila Odinga Prime Minister.
