Mustafa Hamid

  • Mustafa Hamid is a senior Al Qaeda associate and primary liason between the terrorist group and the Iranian government. During the mid 90s he is said to have acted as middle man between Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden and Iranian officials, brokering an agreement that allowed members of the organization safe passage to Afghanistan through Iran. During the late 90s, when tensions were high between Afghanistan and Iran, Hamid traveled to Tehran, where he once again acted as an intermediary, this time on behalf of the Taliban.U.S. Department of the Treasury: Treasury Targets Al Qaida Operatives in Iran (January 16, 2009)

    On January 16, 2009 the United States Treasury Department zeroed-in on four alleged Al-Qaeda operatives with ties to the organization's operations in Iran. The department issued executive order 13224, freezing the men's assets and prohibiting transactions between them and U.S. citizens. The purpose of such an order is to target the operatives as well as those that support them, and forces Iran to publicly accept responsibility for how it is meeting its international obligations regarding Al Qaeda.     Mustafa Hamid is the father-in-law of Sayf al-Adl , a senior military commander for Al Qaeda. During his time in Iran Hamid forged a relationship with Iran's Revolutionary Guards, who both harbored him and served as his primary contact between Al Qaeda and Iran. In 2001 he tried to to negotiate with the Iranian government in attempts to relocate Al Qaeda families to Iran. Then in 2002 he encouraged contacts between Iran's Revolutionary Guards and a senior Al Qaeda military commander.
