Muramasa The Demon Blade Walkthrough

Muramasa The Demon Blade is a 2D side scrolling action RPG that is made by Vanillaware, the creators of the cult classic Odin Sphere for the PS2. General Tips

Combat

  1. Combat in Muramasa The Demon Blade is very fast paced, which can lead to a temptation to just button mash your way through everything. While button mashing does work for the most part, there are times where you need to be a little more technical and utilize some of the special moves in Monohime and Kisuke's repertoire.
  2. The aerial dash attack, which can be performed by holding down A and pressing right or left, is a great way to rack up hits on large or airborne enemies.
  3. You can perform three aerial dash attacks in one jump, but you can also use regular slashes in between those three aerial dashes to make really long and elaborate air combos.
  4. Holding A and pressing up will execute an uppercut that is great for hitting enemies that are right over your head, or popping grounded enemies up into the air. Use this to either start or continue aerial combos.
  5. Sometimes you'll need to use a charged jumping spin slash to break the swords of samurai's who will otherwise block your strikes. To do this, hold A and down on the control stick until you enter your block stance. Once in your block stance, let go of A to execute the attack.
  6. Another important technique is the Quick Draw technique. This can be used by pressing C when your sword at the top of the screen is flashing. The Quick Draw is a powerful move that will hit every enemy on screen. Use it when you become overwhelmed or just to deal some extra damage.
  7. Most importantly, during combat make sure to make use of each blade's special attacks. Using a special attack will use up some of the swords health, but sword health is easily regenerated by collecting souls or just by putting it in its sheath. Don't ever feel like you need to be overly conservative with using your special attacks.
  8. Defensively your only options are blocking, repelling enemy projectiles, and an evasive roll. In most cases, I'd recommend rolling out of danger as opposed to blocking due to the fact that blocking is a surefire way to get your sword broken quickly.
  9. Blocking can be done by holding down the A button and rolling is performed by holding down on the control stick and then moving it diagonally to the left or right.
  10. To repel enemy projectiles, just press A when they're about to hit you. Use this to help you take down spirits and hard to hit flying enemies that fire lots of fireballs and other projectiles.

Cooking

  1. Cooking is a very important aspect of Muramasa's gameplay that is easy to neglect. Whenever you can, try to buy cooking tips and recipes from shops to expand your list of dishes that you can create.
  2. Keeping up with the latest recipes can make your life a lot easier by providing you with an ample supply of health regaining items and hot pots that give you useful stat boosts.

Healing Items

  1. It's important to note that whenever you use a food based recovery item, it will start to make Kisuke or Monohime feel full.
  2. You cannot eat anything else until the fullness meter disappears, so try not to put yourself in a dangerous position if you are still full and cannot use anymore health recovery items.
  3. Pellets on the other hand generally do not add to your characters fullness meter, so try to keep a healthy supply of them at all times.

Difficulty Level

  1. There are two difficulty levels at the start of Muramasa called Muso and Shura, which basically translate to easy and hard.
  2. I'd personally recommend starting the game on Shura and playing through it until you come to a spot that you become absolutely stuck on, should a time ever even come. When that happens, you can actually switch to Muso via the pause menu, finish the part, and then switch back to Shura.
  3. I recommend this because Muso is really easy and part of the fun of Muramasa comes from the challenge that it presents and the rewarding satisfaction you get from completing it the way it was meant to be played.

Death

  1. Unlike most games, death in Muramasa is not something to fear. There is actually absolutely no penalty for dying. In fact, dying in many cases can actually make strategic sense.
  2. When you die you will start at the beginning of the room with full health and might potentially face off against a group of enemies that was different from the group that you died against, or no enemies at all.
