Mumbai International Airport History
Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is India’s biggest airport. It is located north of the West coast, 32 north of the city center. They fly domestic and international with an average of 400 flights a day.
In 1932, Mumbai’s need of airplanes began for mail planes. The airplanes initially used the Juhu air strip, but in 1940 the government decided they needed a better destination. He placed the airport at Santa Cruz, where nowadays the domestic terminal can be found. The name Chhatrapatu Shivaji comes from the founder of the Maratha Empire in Western India in 1674. This king is seen as one of the biggest heroes in India, with a just and welfare-minded attitude.
From 1946 to 1958 the airport was used for military reasons and in the hands of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. In 1958 a new terminal was born. In 1972 the airport was turned over to the government of India. The airport grew fast the decades after that and now serves around 55,000 passengers a day. http://www.mumbai-bom.airports-guides.com/http://www.csia.in/default.asp
