Multi Robot Pursuit System

    • The US proposes spending $4 billion by 2010 on robotic weaponsNew Scientist: 'Robot arms race' underway, expert warns (February 27, 2008)
    • The Pentagon has already spent two years developing robots which can identify potential threats without human helpNew Scientist: 'Robot arms race' underway, expert warns (February 27, 2008)
    • Potential future uses: search and rescue, fire fighting, radiation sensing
    • Robots would weigh less than 100 Kg
    • Three to five robots per system
  • The United States Department of Defense is developing a multi-robot pursuit system. The technology would allow packs of robots to be controlled by a single operator for use in pursuing and capturing human targets. The robots could also be used for tracking, research, and exploration.
  • Ethical Concerns

Critics fear that the technology would be used irresponsibly, giving life-or-death decisions to machines. "The main problem is that these systems do not have the discriminative power to do that," said researcher Noel Sharkey.New Scientist: Packs of robots will hunt down uncooperative humans... (October 22, 2008) Steve Wright of Leeds Metropolitan University said "What we have here are the beginnings of something designed to enable robots to hunt down humans like a pack of dogs. Once the software is perfected we can reasonably anticipate that they will become autonomous and become armed."New Scientist: Packs of robots will hunt down uncooperative humans...
