Regarding the election, Mugabe said in a speech, "We are not going to give up our country because of a mere X [on a ballot]. How can a ballpoint fight with a gun?"TimesOnline: Robert Mugabe warns Zimbabwe's voters: "How can a pen fight with a gun?" (June 17, 2008) Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out of the election after his supporters were beaten and killed. Mugabe's supporters, according to eyewitness reports and independent observers, allegedly forced many people to vote at gunpoint.
